Protected Areas
Benefiting from a unique beauty and heritage and the recognition by the population of the necessity of protect its most valuable resource led to the early establishment of some nature reserves on the island, for example:
Deserted Islands – A set of 3 small islands located southeast of Madeira Island, formed by steep cliffs, rocks and reddish ash. It is home to about 30 specimens of an endangered seal species popularly known as the “Sea Wolf” or “Monk Seal”, Tarantulas, and other species of reptiles and seabirds.
”Selvagens” Islands – Located 250 kilometres from Madeira Island, they have unique characteristics that have led to the protection of natural habitats and biodiversity, including the many species of seabirds that inhabit there.
Nature Reserves of Garajau and Ponta de São Lourenço – The presence of a peculiar fauna and flora in these areas where we can see some specimens of Mantas, Jamantas and Meros led the Madeiran Government to define these areas as unique heritage assets and where human access is controlled in order to protect these species.
Cultural Tradition
Little more than 600 years have passed since the discovery of Madeira Island, but it was enough time to provide the region with a unique culture, traditions and customs.
With the predominance of the Catholic religion on the Island many customs are related to this theme, we speak for example of the masses, of the “arraiais” (popular celebrations of a religious nature) and of the Philharmonic Bands.
The folklore and the regional costume is the genuine manifestation of the cultural tradition of the Madeiran people.
The typical “bailinho”, with its rhythm, music and peculiar dances describe the local traditions, love, satire and experiences.
Traditional instruments such as Braguinha and the viola de arame complete the experience that more than seen should be lived, and the “vilões” as the dancers are known make sure of involving the audience in their performance.
A rich gastronomy characterized by a palette of exotic flavors and colors makes the delight of our visitors.
The “bolo do caco ” with garlic butter, the kebab, the black swordfish, the corn and the drinks like the poncha, the niquita and the “pé de cabra” always complicate the decision in choosing the menu.
